Large Boats 2011.

Large Boats 20th November. Report sent in by Malcolm Stote.
Nine members enjoyed an unseasonal November day to fish their monthly large boat competition off the Needles. Cod proved elusive but a selection of other species, including pout, whiting, smoothhound, dogfish, thornback ray, pollack and turbot, provided all day action. A specimen thornback ray of 14lbs was caught {and returned} by Malcolm Gerrish.
1st Steve Batchelor 152pts, 2nd Derek Smith 119pts, 3rd Robin Lane 102pts, 4th Malcolm Gerrish 66pts, 5th Alec Harmer 42pts.
Large Boats 14th August.  This report was sent in by our Publicity Officer Malcolm Stote.
A strong tide, troublesome weed and stronger than predicted winds, resulted in several moves during the day by skipper Art Savage to find optimum fishing conditions. Apart from the ever-obliging dogfish, fish remained scarce and included black bream, garfish, spotted and thornback ray and pout. Robin Lane caught and returned a near specimen thornback ray that went 12lbs when weighed on the boat. Perhaps the highlight of the day was watching nearly 300 yachts participating in the Fastnet Race, buffeting their way across Christchurch Bay.
1st Kim Gregory 53pts, 2nd Steve Batchelor 33pts, 3rd Jane Hopkins 27pts, 4th Robin Lane 23pts, 5th Derek Smith 19pts.

Large Boats 26th June. This report was sent in by the Large Boat Commodore Alec S Harmer.
After weeks of high winds, a brief window in the weather enabled ten members to fish their June large boat competition off the Isle of Wight. The morning mist eventually burned off to make way for the hottest day of the year so far. Tope up to 20lbs plus proved to be an obstacle by taking baits meant for target species. Kim Gregory caught the first brill seen on a large boat competition for possibly at least twenty years.Best fish on the day was a spotted ray of 4lbs 10.4ozs and caught by Steve Batchelor. Other fish caught included turbot, blonde ray, small-eyed ray, dogfish, black bream, pollack, pout, mackerel and weever.
1st Steve Batchelor 119pts, 2nd Derek Smith 66pts, 3rd Kim Gregory 50pts, 4th Robin Lane 39pts, 5th Andy Fielder 33pts.
